Overview
Mental health and substance use disorders affect people from all walks of life and all age groups. Substance use disorders and behavioral addictions often are a result of self-treatment of underlying and untreated/undertreated mental health conditions. These illnesses are common, recurrent, and often serious, but they are treatable, and many people do recover. The increase demand for treatment, however, is not is not being met by a corresponding increase in access to or availability treatment. Practitioners may not have the clinical skills or knowledge to adequately treat an individual presenting with poly-substance use disorder and co-occurring mental illness. Updated education on treatment options and barriers is needed in order for clinicians to implement effective strategies to the prevention and treatment of addictive disorders.
